The 'Wild News of Sidmouth' is now active:
University of the 3rd Age
"For the people of Sidmouth interested in nature and for those from elsewhere interested in the nature of Sidmouth"
An information and learning resource
Have you ever wanted to understand the wildlife, geology, and hidden habitats in our town, only to hit a wall of overwhelming technical and academic data?
We are blessed locally that a number of individuals produce excellent articles and lead interesting walks looking at various aspects of our local natural history but many other environmental guides can either swamp you technical terminology or offer surface-level tourist blurbs. The Wild Side of Sidmouth “Guided Learning" programme is going to try and completely flip this script by leading a path through our natural environment, its habitats and the wildlife of the many sites of natural interest within the Sidmouth area.
Having a basic understanding of the natural world not only enhances your afternoon stroll but, in a time when nature recovery is a key issue, it gives you an awareness of what is actively being done to further the cause; it may even encourage you to get involed and help!
Local Ecology Is Far Deeper Than You Think (200 Pages Deep)
Most people assume their local park just has a few common birds and trees, but real natural ecosystems are staggeringly complex. The main "Wild Side of Sidmouth" digital archive maps out this density using a strict, elegant taxonomy: 3 central themes, 6 topics per theme, and 8 threads per topic.
That adds up to 144 detailed web pages, alongside survey records tracking 937 animal and plant species across 50 local sites of natural interest.
Trying to understand how ancient rock formations, seasonal climate shifts, and interconnected river corridors overlap usually triggers immediate navigational fatigue. This new “Guided Learning” programme cuts through that friction with a simple, grounded mission:
"To Uncover the wild side of Sidmouth one step at a time"
Micro-Learning Replaces Traditional Tests and Deadlines
Staring at a 200-page archive is a quick way to guarantee you will close the tab and never return. The Wild Side of Sidmouth bypasses information overload through its "Guided Learning" program, converting a dense two-year curriculum into bite-sized micro-learning.
No bloated apps. No subscription paywalls. No passwords to remember. No quizzes or tests. No deadlines. Join and leave at any time, total flexibility.

With built-in seasonal breaks in July, August, and December, learners build lasting ecological literacy entirely at their own pace.
Uncluttered Space for Genuine Ecological Discussion
Learning is rarely a one-size-fits-all experience. To keep things engaging, each twice-weekly despatch links to multi-modal website content—letting users dive into written research notes, view illustrated presentations, watch animated overviews, or listen to audio discussions.
Instead of shoving community interaction onto noisy social media platforms driven by ads and attention-grabbing algorithms, the project hosts a dedicated Community Hub. This gives local learners a clean, ad-free digital sanctuary where they can ask questions, share observations, and compare notes without commercial distractions.
This project proves that when you combine smart AI tools, clear digital organisation, and a zero-pressure delivery system, local nature stops being intimidating and starts being inspiring.
How could a bite-sized, community-driven guide like this transform the way you explore the wild side of Sidmouth?
A Community learning experience
This programme is NOT a structured training course for would be students … it is intended to be a community learning experience where a framework and the basic information is provided to enable those involved to share knowledge and learn together.
This programme is NOT provided by any specific organisation, authority or educational institution. It is driven by the personal experience of one person who arrived in Sidmouth in 2022 and who wanted to understand his new world and this is a sharing of what he has learned.
This programme IS a mission to share knowledge, raise awareness of nature conservation issues and to enthuse others to contribute to the recovery of the local natural environment.
PROGRAMME STARTS JANUARY 2027 … YOU CAN SIGN UP NOW BY SUBSCRIBING FREE TO THE PROGRAMME’S "SUBSTACK".
