You are suddenly surrounded by a significant amount of dark, glassy walls that shimmer with an obsidian-like intensity, framed by a startling white, chalky crust.
Why would a town built upon a foundation of soft red sand be so structurally defined by these monochromatic, vitreous stones? The answer reveals a fascinating intersection of 19th-century fashion, pragmatic engineering, and a geological secret hidden not in the cliffs, but in the hills high above the valley floor.
In the early 1800s, building with local red sandstone was often seen as mundane. For the elite, the "Picturesque" movement demanded something more exotic and visually striking. Within a single square foot, two distinct environments exist side-by-side, allowing a remarkable diversity of life to take hold.

Wall Rue ( Asplenium ruta-muraria ): A resilient, scarce fern that tucks itself into the mortar joints.
Black Tar Lichen ( Hydropunctaria maura ): A dark, encrusting species that mimics the colour of the knapped flint.
Grey Pin-cushion Moss ( Grimmia pulverata ): A common, silver-tufted bryophyte that thrives on the exposed stone.
Black Spleenwort ( Asplenium nigram ): An elegant, occasional fern with dark, wiry stems.
"The complexity of these walls is easily underestimated. Because they offer both acidic and alkaline substrates in such close proximity, they host micro-ecosystems that require a hand lens and much patience to truly appreciate. Note that identification is notoriously difficult; many of these mosses and lichens are so similar that only microscopic study can confirm their identity with 100% certainty."
