Conventional wisdom suggests that nature is something we travel to—a destination found in the depths of a forest, the salt-sprayed cliffs of the Jurassic Coast, or the purple-clad heaths of the interior. We often view our urban landscape as a secondary environment, a concrete compromise where nature is merely a visitor. However, a closer look at Sidmouth’s local ecology reveals a startling reality: the most vibrant and diverse life in our town is thriving exactly where we live, work, and walk.
What are often dismissed as "brownfield sites"—lands modified or developed by human activity—are proving to be Sidmouth’s most critical ecological engines. Far from being derelict or "lost," these unpolished corners are true hotspots of local biodiversity.
It is a common misconception that development represents an ecological void. Yet, recent survey data uncovers a hidden tenacity in Sidmouth’s urban-adjacent spaces. While brownfield sites accounted for only 30% of the total areas surveyed, they hosted a staggering 64.1% of all recorded species.
Out of 743 species identified across the entire region, 476 were found within these "human" spaces. Even more surprising is the data regarding mammals; while one might expect them to flee for the hills, 85.7% of all recorded mammal species (6 out of 7) were found on brownfield sites. These parks, garden edges, and lanes are the primary meeting ground for people and nature, serving as the frontline of our local ecosystem. As the survey concludes
:"Overall, 30% of the sites surveyed were grouped as ‘brownfield’... and yet 64.1% of all species recorded on all sites were present on brownfield sites."
One might assume that the "bustle" of a seaside town would deter wildlife, but Sidmouth’s bird populations show a remarkable resilience to the human footprint. Approximately 76.4% of all bird species recorded (42 out of 55) were found navigating our developed sites.From the hedgerow-lined lanes of Bickwell and Dunscombe to the scrubby margins of the Harpford Trailway, these feathered residents have found a way to coexist with vehicle traffic and human disturbance. In Sidmouth, proximity to humanity is not a deterrent; it is a habitat choice. These sites provide essential corridors for feeding and breeding, proving that "wild" is a state of mind rather than a distance from town.
The botanical diversity of these 15 brownfield sites is equally impressive, with nearly 70% of all plant species occurring within them. While 257 species were recorded, the "startling" nature of this figure lies in its composition.
These sites act as a unique habitat bridge, hosting "weeds of cultivation" and garden escapes that are rarely found in the competition-heavy environments of forests or the acidic soils of our heaths. These "beautiful weeds" contribute to a local ecological tapestry that is entirely unique to the urban-adjacent landscape. They represent an unpolished form of nature that, while not "traditional," provides a richness of flora that exists nowhere else in the region.
This resilience extends into the microscopic and the overlooked. The survey highlights how non-flowering plants like ferns and mosses have claimed the micro-habitats provided by flint stone walls and shady garden corners.
More remarkable still is the success of fungi and lichens. Despite the persistent challenge of vehicle emissions and air pollution within the town centre, these organisms continue to prosper. The Sidmouth Cemetery has emerged as a particular stronghold, a quiet sanctuary where nature has established a firm foothold amidst the monuments. While fungi find life in the shadows of the cemetery, however, another vital group of residents is struggling to keep pace.
The "insect gap" provides a sobering reality check. Unlike the thriving bird and plant populations, insects showed a "negative measurement." Only 48.6% of the recorded insect species were found on brownfield sites—a mere 68 out of 140.
This deficit is a two-fold crisis: a reflection of the general global decline in insect populations and a consequence of our own aesthetic choices. Many of the floral species in our town centres are non-native; while they are visually stunning, they often lack the high-quality nectar required by local insects. This serves as a vital reminder that our conservation choices in our own backyards directly impact the survival of these essential creatures.
The survey identified several "super-sites" that serve as the crown jewels of Sidmouth’s biodiversity. The Byes and the Upper Byes are the standout performers, with each site hosting over 23% of every species recorded in the entire survey (175 and 171 species, respectively).
But the richness is not confined to these river-side corridors. The influence of brownfield sites is widespread; ten different sites recorded 100 or more species. This includes functional spaces like the Lockyer Observatory (134 species) and even our Town Parks and Gardens (108 species), which are significantly outperforming many "wilder" areas. The high species counts in these areas are a direct testament to the land management efforts of conservation volunteers and the Sid Vale Association.
The data is undeniable: dismissing brownfield sites as ecologically unimportant is a fundamental mistake. These "unpolished" spaces—the lanes we walk, the parks where we rest, and even the cemeteries we visit—are the primary engines of Sidmouth’s biodiversity.
Rather than looking only toward distant horizons for nature, we must look closer to home. If our "forgotten" lanes and unpolished garden edges are actually the vital heart of our local ecosystem, are we looking in the wrong direction for the future of conservation? Perhaps it is time we change the way we value the "wild" that lives right under our feet.
