When you step into the cool, dappled shade what is it that tells you you are in a woodland? Is it simply the sheer number of trees standing as wooden scaffolding against the sky? Or is it something more visceral—the smell of damp leaf mould, the specific crunch of the earth beneath your boots, or the carpet of bluebells that return every spring?
For most of us, "woodland" is a feeling, but for ecologists it is a classification that requires peering past the branches and into the soil. Their mission to map the local landscape has revealed something counter-intuitive: some of our most beloved "forests" are technically little more than manicured gardens, while some of our unassuming narrow lanes are actually the ghosts of ancient, vanished woods.
The "Arbitrary" Science of Seeing Trees
In the world of formal ecology, there is a rigid standard called "Phase 1" analysis—a strict, metric-heavy method for mapping British habitats. However, the Sidmouth Nature project takes a more nuanced, observational approach recognising that the lived experience of a landscape does not always fit into a scientist’s neatest box.
The project is honest about its methodology: "Designation of a site as primarily ‘woodland' is acknowledged as arbitrary, not strictly 'science'."
This distinction is vital. By stepping away from the cold rigidity of Phase 1 metrics, the project is able to "see" the woodland identity in places a traditional survey might overlook. It allows us to distinguish between a place like The Byes—which, despite its beautiful canopy, is excluded from the "woodland" list because of its manicured amenity grass and non-native trees—and places where the "spirit" of the forest still lingers in the verges, even if the trees themselves have changed.
Ghost Forests: The Lanes that Remained
This observational flexibility leads us to the fascinating case of Harcombe Lane and Milltown Lane. If you were to follow a strict scientific handbook, these are simply road yet the Sidmouth Nature project identifies them as ecological echoes.
While they lack the dense, structural "forest" canopy we expect, these lanes are lined with trees and, more importantly, are bursting with woodland flora along their banks. This suggests a beautiful, haunting history: these paths were likely ancient footpaths that once wound through deep, sprawling woods. The Great Woods were cleared centuries ago to make way for the world we know, but the plants—the "natural memory" of the soil—refuse to leave. In these lanes, you aren't just walking on a road; you are walking through a ghost forest that still remembers its ancient roots.
The 70% Rule for "Ancient" Identity
To ensure this observation isn't purely subjective, the project uses vegetative analysis as a reality check. In this study, a site is generally justified as a woodland if more than 60% of its plant species are those specifically associated with woodland habitats.
While many local spots meet this baseline, three "elite" sites emerged, showing a dominance of woodland species exceeding 70%:
Core Hill Wood: 75.0% dominance (Note: Recording is ongoing here, so this impressive figure may still shift).
Riverside Wood: 73.0% dominance.
Combe Head Wood: 70.5% dominance.
Such high concentrations of specialist woodland plants suggest these are not just "groups of trees" that popped up recently. This level of botanical dominance implies these sites have been established as woodlands for significantly longer than their neighbours, marking them as the most ecologically mature and "authentic" heartlands of the Sidmouth valley.
The Geography of Character
If you look at a map of these sites, a pattern emerges. Almost all of Sidmouth’s designated woodlands are perched on the higher ground of the valley sides or to the north. But height isn't the only thing that defines them.
Most of these upland sites bear the marks of human history in the form of conifer plantation species. These evergreens are a sign of intervention—trees planted for timber or landscape management. This makes Riverside Wood a fascinating outlier. Tucked away from the higher ground, it lacks these conifer species entirely. This absence suggests that Riverside Wood may be a rarer, more "natural" remnant of self-seeded deciduous habitat, untouched by the plantation trends that shaped the ridges above.
A Walk Through Time
Understanding the dominance of certain plants over others changes the way we walk through our local environment. It transforms a simple stroll into a walk through a living timeline. When we look past the immediate canopy, we see that some areas are remnants of a truly ancient world, while others—like our tree-lined lanes—are the persistent fingerprints of a landscape that no longer exists.The next time you find yourself wandering a path in Sidmouth, look down at the ferns and flowers at your feet. Choose a 10m x 10m square area. Count the number of different plant species you see on the ground.
Total Species: How many different types of plants can you find?
Woodland Indicators: Use a local guidebook to identify which ones are "woodland specialists" (e.g., Bluebells, Wood Anemone, or Wild Garlic).
The Dominance Calculation: * (Number of Woodland Species ÷ Total Number of Species) x 100 = % Dominance
