Recording of floral species present on the Sidmouth "brownfield" sites reveals secrets of the past before the urbanisation of the Sid Valley which began almost 250 years ago.
We often dismiss "brownfield" sites as scars on the map—neglected, empty gaps of concrete and gravel awaiting a purpose, but if we interrogate the blossoms and brambles currently claiming these spaces, a different story emerges. These seemingly discarded plots are, in fact, living time capsules. They hold the ecological fingerprints of a Sidmouth that existed 250 years ago, long before the first paving stones of the modern town were laid. By looking closer at what we traditionally call "waste" ground, we find that our modern landscape is still deeply entangled with an ancient woodland and farming past that refuses to be erased.
There is a persistent myth that urban development completely severs a land’s connection to its wilder origins. However, the data reveals a startling survival story. On Sidmouth’s brownfield sites, we find a staggering 79.2% of the area’s broad-leaved woodland species—84 out of the 106 total species recorded in the entire region.
This high concentration is beautifully counter-intuitive. It tells us that before the town’s expansion, a dense woodland dominated this geography. Today, these "disturbed" sites act as a final refuge for that original landscape. Where a developer sees a vacant lot, the ecological historian sees a sanctuary where the fingerprints of a prehistoric forest still cling to the soil....remnants of that woodland can still be found today wherever a corner has been left relatively undisturbed.
The plants we often curse as "weeds" are frequently historical artifacts rather than random invaders. Approximately 61.4% of species associated with cultivated and disturbed land are thriving on Sidmouth's brownfields. While some are recent arrivals from over the garden fence, many are the direct biological descendants of a specific agricultural era.
Until the late 18th century, the landscape surrounding Sidmouth was a patchwork of "strip" field farming—a medieval system of long, narrow communal plots. The flora we see today didn't just appear; it has persisted for centuries, surviving the transition from active agriculture to "waste" ground. These plants are the living heritage of a pre-industrial economy, survivors of the plough....many of the species of cultivated and disturbed land will still occur today as descendants of that farming era.
The traditional field enclosures that once defined the Devonshire countryside continue to dictate the biodiversity of the modern town. A remarkable 80% of all recorded hedgerow species in the survey area are currently flourishing on brownfield sites.
This continuity is driven by key ecological arteries like the Harpford Trailway, Bickwell, Dunscombe, and the Upper Byes. These sites function as an ecological bridge, maintaining the region's traditional "site profile." These are not just random clusters of scrub; they are the remnants of ancient field boundaries and enclosures that have been integrated into the urban fabric, allowing species that once defined the edges of 18th-century pastures to remain anchored in the town center.
In a striking testament to Sidmouth’s evolution, 100% of species associated with built-up areas and nearly 87.1% of parkland species are found on these brownfield sites. In ecology, a 100% correlation is an extraordinary rarity; it signals that these sites are not just part of the urban ecosystem—they are the urban ecosystem.
This density is the result of a fascinating "layering effect." Rather than the new replacing the old, Sidmouth has built its modern identity—represented by the 26 water-margin species at The Knapp and Deepway Meadow ponds or the lush diversity of The Byes—directly on top of its ancient foundations. The result is a high-density biodiversity where 250-year-old agricultural descendants grow alongside Victorian garden escapes and modern urban specialists. Human activity has not made the land lifeless; it has made it a complex, multi-generational library of the natural world.
Sidmouth’s brownfield sites are far more than blank slates for future construction; they are vital archives of our natural and historical identity. They prove that "waste ground" is often a misnomer for the most biodiverse land in a town—places where the 18th-century countryside and the 21st-century garden meet.
As we look toward the future of urban planning, we must confront a difficult question: Can we afford to pave over a 250-year-old living library in the name of "cleaning up" the town, or should we recognise the heritage already growing there?
